In January this year, Indiana will participate in a special youth program for students from Brazil. Sponsored in part by International Partners of the Americas and the American Embassy in Brasilia, Indiana Partners will host four students and a teacher during the week of January 15-22.

The visiting teacher is Cleide Frazão Nascimento from Brasilia. Cleide has 14 years of teaching experience and is a very popular teacher with her students. She has never traveled abroad before. She expects her visit to help her incorporate more about U.S. culture in her classes.

Two of the visiting students are from our Partner state, Rio Grande do Sul. Cássio Pereira Marques is a high school senior from Guaíba, RS. Cássio's plan for the future includes becoming the owner of a company that creates cartoons so he can make children's dreams come true. He is interested in studying engineering. The Barratt family in Terre Haute will host him.

The other two students are Ana Carolina Pereira Borges from Patrocino, Minas Gerais, and Lisane Moreira from Curitiba, Paraná. Ana Carolina, volunteers to work with young children. She will stay in Muncie with Mike and Cindy Conwell and their two daughters, Jodie and Cara.

This special youth program brings students from Brazil to spend one week in Washington, D.C. and one week in U.S. states with Brazilian partnerships. The purpose is to expose students to American high schools and American universities, and the unique experience of living with an American family.

Notre Dame Awards Peace Prize to Brazil’s President |

President of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, and former President, Fernando Henrique Cardoso (1995-2002) were awarded the Notre Dame Peace Prize for their work in bringing about a peaceful transition of government power at the end of 2002.

President Lula and Ex-President Cardoso each received a grant of $10,000. In addition, $10,000 will be contributed on behalf of each of the recipients to the institution of their choice. President Lula directed his donation to the Hunger! Zero Program and President Cardoso directed his to the Community Solidarity Program.

In choosing current Brazilian President Lula and ex-President Fernando Enrique, the Institute stated, “the prize recognizes the leadership demonstrated by both men in the national elections of the past year (2002), which represented the first democratic transition between two presidents elected in Brazil, since the 1960’s.”

Indiana/RS Board Members Honored by International Partners |

A special part of the November 2003 annual meeting of International Partners of the Americas in Lexington, Kentucky were honors for two outgoing Board members, our own Bill Fuller from Indiana and Vera Lia Fortini from Rio Grande do Sul. Both Board members were recognized for their service with distinction during the annual business meeting. Vera Lia sent beijos and abraços to her Indiana friends, and a wind chime made with RS semi-precious stones.

Kentucky/Ecuador Partners sponsored this year’s meeting. Several side trips and a variety of displays including an International Market Place showcased their many partnership activities.

One of the special features of the convention is how Partners puts its values into practice during its meetings. All sessions were trilingual, at a minimum, with earphones available for simultaneous translations that included question and answer sessions. Participants showed their appreciation of this service with patience as earphones were passed out, and translators arrived. All understood the need for clear communication and requests for repetitions of speakers’ points were common.

Next year, Partners of the Americas will celebrate its fortieth anniversary at its meeting in Antigua, Guatemala. Partnerships are asked to submit an account of their histories and to submit ideas of how to make this a special anniversary celebration. You can keep up to date with activities of Partners by frequent visits to their web page www.partners.net
